Jimmy Wofford
A three-time
Olympian, two-time World Championship team member, and five-time
National Three-Day Event Champion, these days Jim Wofford
is one of the country's most popular clinicians. He's had
at least one student on every US Olympic, World Championship, and
Pan Am Games team since 1978; all four silver-medal 2000 US Olympic
eventing team members and three of the four gold-medal 2002 World
Championship eventing team members were graduates of his program.
He's also written "Training the Three-Day Event Horse and Rider"
and "Gymnastics: Systematic Training for Jumping Horses."
Jim coached Canada's event team at the 2002 World Championships
and will continue in this role through the 2004 Olympics.
Brian Sabo
While
Brian was riding ponies at a Los Angeles area barn his mother Kitty
Sabo began a long friendship with a very young Hilda Gurney. Before
long Hilda had struck out on her own as a trainer and Brian followed
her. Hilda and Kitty founded the Woodland Hills Pony Club in 1965.
In 1974 Brian passed his “A” rating. Brian served as D.C. of this
club two times (1975-1977 and 1980-1983). During these early years
Brian was introduced to the sport of vaulting. Eventually becoming
a vaulting instructor Brian was proud to coach the Hidden Hills
Horsemen vaulters to an unprecedented three national “A” championships.
Hilda,
the inspiration for many of the top trainers and riders in the United
States was in the finest sense a mentor to Brian. Through her leadership
he was introduced to the sport of Eventing in 1963. Brian won his
first Preliminary three-day event in 1968 followed by winning the
National Intermediate Championships in 1969. This was also the year
his coach, Hilda, won the U.S. Open Championships. Riding a number
of horses his active riding career spanned twenty years. This consistency
led to being named the leading rider in USEA Area 6 in 1969 and
1981. Brian’s travels from coast to coast allowed him to successfully
ride over most of the great American three-day event courses. Rides
at Pebble Beach , Wild Horse Valley , Ram Tap, CTETA, Blue Ridge,
Ledyard, Fair Hill, Radnor, Chesterland and Kentucky give him a
unique historical perspective. Brian remained active through the
advanced level on both coasts until 1984 when his coaching activities
began to take precedence. Brian and his wife Lisa, also a graduate
“A” pony clubber, advanced level competitor, and Gurney protégé
met at Pony Club and now work together training horses and coaching
riders. As a volunteer to the horse community Brian has served as
a USPC District Commissioner, USEA Area VI Chairperson (1985-1987),
CDS L.A. chapter public relations chairperson (1973), AVA board
of governors (1976-1978) and CTETA founding vice president (1976-1989).
Brian was selected Chief Liaison Officer for the 1984 Olympic games.
Asked to help with the show jumping phase of the three-day event
by good friend Neil Ayer, Brian was eventually awarded the contract
to design and build the three-day event show jumping course at Santa
Anita.
Currently,
as a USEA level 4 Instructor and USEA Instructor Certification Program
faculty member, Brian is focused on helping others become the best
riders, trainers, coaches and mentors they can be.
